Celly in Seattle: Episode 5, Walter Jones

We got carried away a bit in this super long episode but there’s a lot here to digest! Welcome to our latest installment of Celly in Seattle (episode 5). We were thrilled to welcome Seahawks legend Walter Jones to talk about hockey and Seattle sports. We also touch on the Key Arena progress, possible Seattle NHL team general managers, The Russian Five movie, and more.

Here’s a sneak peek of what we covered this week.

According to this Komo News article, several lower Queen Anne community members voiced their concern over how arena construction would negatively effect their businesses. We talked a little about the current stage of the Key Arena renovation and the ongoing environmental impact statement process.

Ken Holland and Kyle Dubas were two names that we’ve mentioned before as possible Seattle NHL team General Managers but these guys are no longer available. In the podcast, we throw out some more ideas around possible GM options and speculate on the role analytics will have on choosing team leadership.

Vegas is at it again, and by “it” we mean “winning.” We discussed how the success of Vegas might set unrealistic expectations for Seattle. We also named our favorites for Eastern/Western conference champs and Stanely Cup Final match-ups.

This week, the we had the opportunity to watch a screening of The Russian Five, a new feature film about five Russian players that lead the city of Detroit to back to back Stanley Cups. We shared our thoughts after watching the film. There are showings at the Seattle International Film Festival on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday so definitely make time to check it out.

Doug and Sean talked with Walter Jones about his recent Everett Silvertips game, hockey, and Seattle sports in general. Thanks to Big Walt for joining us!

A huge thanks to everyone who sent in questions! Keep them coming.

Plus, an off Twitter question from Robbie: How do you think the NHL should respond to the Supreme Court ruling allowing legal sports betting on state by state basis? If approved by Washington State, how much should the NHL Seattle team embrace betting? What should that look like?

As always, we ended the podcast with our Three Stars (our favorite hockey people/moments) of the week.
