NHL DFS Picks: Strategy, advice, values for DraftKings, FanDuel for Tuesday, November 14

It’s a medium-sized eight-game NHL DFS slate on Tuesday, but there are still plenty of potential value picks for DraftKings and FanDuel contests. Whether you’re playing in a turbo (three games) or late contest (two games), we have some daily fantasy hockey advice for you. Matchups, advanced stats, potential points per dollar — we take it all into account to help with your strategy.

Please note that DraftKings has a new contest called “The Dangle”. That has an $8 entry with $15,000 going to first. Also, one game has an over/under of six based on Vegas odds. Of course, Vegas is not always right, but it’s still something to keep in mind.

Reminder: You should also consult multiple avenues for your NHL DFS research, not just this article. Because of the volatile nature of goalies (and other reasons), there will be more information on social media coming closer to roster lock. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you are looking for even more advice and insight, please check me out on Twitter @ChrisWasselDFS. Let’s get into tonight’s value picks after a visit from the RotoQL optimizer.

Tuesday NHL DFS Picks: Center values

Erik Haula, Vegas @ Edmonton (DraftKings $4,200, FanDuel $4,600)

Haula is a kind of a sneaky pick on a night with a bunch of higher-profile options. Edmonton’s depth can be attacked. The second-line center has nine points in 12 games and will excel against depth matchups. The Haula line does get cratered possession-wise sometimes, and like the first Vegas line it’s operating on a high PDO at even strength (5 on 5 on-ice shooting percentage plus save percentage). There is risk, but again it doesn’t take much to hit value. William Karlsson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are reasonable mid-priced options in this game alone. With the eight-game slate, there is a enough room to set up a few different lineups that are outside the limits of being safe. This can even be a nice one-off if needed.

The good news is there are several other options as far as value on Tuesday night. Even Nico Hischier and Brayden Point will be nice shelter even with their rising DraftKings prices. New Jersey’s first line will have moderate ownership potential. Remember, extreme chalk can be used as long as you know what to expect.

Other Options: Mark Scheifele (chalky), Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid (extra chalky), Anze Kopitar, Jonathan Drouin/Phillip Danault (moderate risk), Derek Stepan (GPP only), Paul Stastny (less owned than STL 1), Jonathan Huberdeau/Vincent Trocheck, Clayton Keller, Kyle Turris.

Crazy Value Possible: Pierre-Luc Dubois (very risky), Christian Dvorak (contrarian value), Ryan Strome (DraftKings only – extreme risk).

Tuesday Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks: Winger values

Jesse Puljujarvi, Edmonton vs. Vegas (DraftKings $3,600, FanDuel $3,300)

Watch to see how Puljujarvi is used. He has six shots and quite a few high-danger scoring chances in his first two games. The risk is that his ownership may be elevated. If the winger plays around 15 minutes again, he is going to get his share of chances playing with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Vegas allows 3.3 goals per game on the road and over 30 shots a night.

Edmonton has been exceedingly sloppy at home, giving up nearly 3.9 goals per game. Good news for players like Reilly Smith again. Dallas and Florida could be rather high scoring, too, as Dallas is not rested and Florida plays high-event hockey at home. This could be in the ridiculously fun category. Even Los Angeles and Vancouver could be a bit of a surprise with the usual chalk.

Tyler Ennis, Kyle Connor, and Andrew Shaw are all nice low-price options on DraftKings tonight. With this slate, even these riskier plays are viable. On a few lineups, these forwards may be worth a shot.

Other Options: Phil Kessel (lower owned than usual), Max Pacioretty, Alex Galchenyuk (GPP flier), Jakub Voracek, Tyler Toffoli, Max Domi (GPP only), Nino Niederreiter (GPP play). Brock Boeser (contrarian), Filip Forsberg (chalk – 9 pts in six meetings against Washington). Boone Jenner. More plays will be on social media.

Crazy Value Possible: Trevor Lewis, Christian Fischer (high risk), Kevin Fiala.

Tuesday NHL DFS Advice: Defensemen picks, values

Aaron Ekblad, Florida vs. Dallas (DraftKings $5,000, FanDuel $4,800)

Choices are abundant among defensemen on Tuesday night. Ekblad shoots a lot typically and has four or more shots in three of his past four contests. On occasion, he will block more shots than usual. That sounds a bit risky, but Florida gives as good as it gets at home. Shots on goal could easily be 35-plus for each team. This means more chances for points in the conventional and not-so-conventional ways.

The defensemen position has lots of possibilities. Dustin Byfuglien could be a semi-chalky-yet-good choice because Arizona allows nearly four goals per game on the road. Justin Schultz is intriguing against Buffalo due to power play potential. Jake Muzzin and Ivan Provorov are mid-priced options that could deliver against Vancouver and Minnesota, respectively.

Other Options: PK Subban (not as chalky), Seth Jones, Shea Weber (moderate risk), Drew Doughty (less risk), Shayne Gostisbehere, John Klingberg, Nate Schmidt

Crazy Value Possible: Ben Hutton, Darnell Nurse, Jordie Benn (high risk)

Tuesday Daily Fantasy Hockey Advice: Goalie picks, values

Charles Lindgren, Montreal vs. Columbus (DraftKings $7,800, FanDuel $8,000)

Lindgren could face a decent amount of shots on Tuesday in what could be a game with somewhat higher pace. Montreal is still allowing 30-plus shots on goal per game over its past five outings. Lindgren has the hot hand, so ride him. He has seven starts and six wins.

Lindgren is a mostly cash option on DraftKings and FanDuel. Some GPP exposure can be tried. That leaves the dilemma of who else to play. The Montreal goalie also has value because of his still attractive price tag on both sites. His points per dollar is less than $1,000 on DraftKings.

The emphasis will be to wait until closer to lock (7 p.m. ET) for any line shifts and goalie changes, etc. Pekka Rinne and Jonathan Quick could be chalky to a point. GPP goalies must make saves. Wins and goals allowed are important but can be secondary. What if your goalie loses?

Other Options: Sergei Bobrovsky (DraftKings only), Cam Talbot and Connor Hellebuyck (mostly cash), Matt Murray (cash only), Antti Raanta (GPP only – heavy risk), Jonathan Quick (chasing the win potential – too high for FanDuel). More choices will come closer to lock.

NHL DFS Picks for Tuesday: Top Lines to Stack

These are based on RotoQL lineup optimizer projections. Coming soon, this will be a space where we dive into even more of what the optimizer spits out.

  • · PIT 1 or PIT 2 – 1 will be highly owned due to Crosby career numbers vs. BUF
  • · WPG 1 – 20-plus percent ownership possible. Chalk to super chalk.
  • · EDM 1 — Chalk level just as high as WPG 1
  • · LAK 2 (Some think LAK 1 will be higher owned – can use parts)
  • · ARZ 1 or 2 for contrarian value
  • · FLA 1 or DAL PP 1 – both may have same point potential.
  • · LAK 1
  • · MTL 1

As updates become available, there will be more line recommendations on social media. This is one of those nights where even one or two scoops can mean a huge difference. One of the major tips for lineup construction will be to start trusting some of the numbers a little more. As we’re almost six weeks into the season, trends are establishing themselves. Our spotlight picks feature more value, which can mean more inherent risk.

NHL DFS Strategy: Reviewing what went wrong

This is always going to be a section full of “hindsight is 20/20”. However, Monday’s two-game slate was scary yet simple. If you did not play Scott Darling, there was trouble, as Dallas could only solve him once. Also, playing Carolina’s first line paid double-digit-per-player dividends on DraftKings. More ownership was on Carolina 2 and the St. Louis top line along with Calgary’s. St. Louis reunited their top-scoring line later in the game to the surprise of no one, but it was too late to save most nights.
