ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Predators’ Stanley Cup plans met a potentially debilitating snag Friday when the team announced that center Ryan Johansen suffered a season-ending left thigh injury against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday.

Johansen, who led the Predators with 13 points in 14 playoff games, required emergency surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center following Nashville’s 3-2 overtime loss. The estimated recovery time is two to three months.

The Predators and Ducks are tied 2-2 in their best-of-seven Western Conference finals series.

It is unclear when Johansen sustained the injury. It might have stemmed from a collision with Ducks defenseman Josh Manson with less than five minutes left in the second period. Johansen returned to the bench in discomfort, but completed the game.

To describe the loss of the Predators’ No. 1 center as crippling would be an understatement. Johansen, 24, piloted the Predators’ run to their first appearance in the Western Conference finals, centering the NHL’s most potent forward line with Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson.

Those three combined for 35 playoff points, and Johansen’s individual output tied the franchise postseason record. He and Arvidsson shared the team scoring lead during the regular season with 61 points each.

“I want to be a guy that’s counted on,” Johansen said last month before the start of the second round. “I want to be a guy that must perform for us to be successful. … It’s a fun time right now for me. It’s just a great opportunity for me to go out there and prove myself that I can be a top player in this league on the biggest stage.

“For me, I’m taking this as a great challenge and opportunity to make a big name for myself.”
