Steven Stamkos: Steven Stamkos’ new deal worth $68 million

Steven Stamkos’ newly signed deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning is an eight-year, $68 million contract.
In other words, Stamkos will come with a $8.5 million annual cap hit moving forward, up from $7.5 million annually during his previous five-year deal. It’s almost certainly less than Stamkos could have gotten on the open market, but by leaving some money on the table, Stamkos has made it easier for the Lightning to maintain its current core. The deal was made official on Wednesday night after reports of it surfaced earlier in the day. Tampa Bay will need to deal with Tyler Johnson, Jonathan Drouin, and Ondrej Palat becoming RFAs next summer while Victor Hedman is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2017.
