Auston Matthews is the big prize at the NHL draft lottery on Saturday, and one sports columnists says the Calgary Flames deserve the top pick.
Eric Francis says bringing Matthews to cow-town would revitalize hockey in Alberta’s largest city.
“This could help build an arena in this city … I think that could boost the rebuild here in Calgary quite quickly,” said Francis.
Our neighbours to the north have selected first at the draft four times in the last six years — and Francis says Calgary can learn from Edmonton’s mistakes.
“I think that the hockey gods have finally decided that they’re going to write some wrongs from the past and I think we are going to see the ‘Battle of Alberta’ return again,” he said.
Calgary Flames have an 8.5% chance of winning the number one draft pick.
