Seth Jones considered as the youngest No.1 player for the 2013 NHL Draft

Seth Jones, defenseman of Portland Winterhawks will be one of the top two selections in the NHL 2013 Entry Draft. He will become the highest-selected African-American player in the history of the league.

Nathan MacKinnon, seems to be the best overall player available around on Sunday.  But Seth Jones is the most important player in this draft.

Seth Jones, the 18 year old player is the youngest player to get such a great publicity in the NHL Draft history. Seth Jones is the son of the former NBA player Popeye Jones. Seth learned to play ice hockey in Denver, Colorado, before moving to Texas where he turned to full time player.

Seth Jones, of the US junior hockey team.

He first represented the United States at the 2010 Under-17 Four Nations Cup.  Seth Jones knows that any of those players could go No. 1. If it happens to be him, he would be thrilled, but it wouldn’t change what he believes he already has accomplished.

“It would mean a lot to me, but me and my family have never been into the race thing. Whether you’re white or black it really doesn’t matter,” Jones said. “Going No. 1 is special. But I could see why that is a big deal around the world. It’s just that I never really thought about that kind of stuff.”

If Seth Jones selected No. 1, then he would be the seventh top choice from the United States and the first since Patrick Kane in 2007.

If anyone is surprised about the hype created by Seth Jones selection as the first over pick in the NHL draft, its all because of the color discrimination. In addition, he would become the highest-drafted black player in the 51-year history of the event.

For many years, NHL has been struggling to grow the game within minority communities, but selection of a black player, Seth Jones is the game-changer. This shows how the game is evolving with diversity to become a game of players from different backgrounds and being successful.

Seth Jones’ selection as top player of the NHL draft is an inspiration to the many young hockey players.
